Expectations of Custodian
As directed by the Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, or Head Custodian, perform routine manual labor associated with the daily cleaning of facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
Custodian Responsibilities
- Remove and properly dispose of trash in all buildings and grounds.
- Scrub, strip, and refinish floors; dust mop, wet mop, sweep, and spray-buff floors.
- Vacuum, shampoo, and clean rugs and carpets.
- Scrub and clean restroom fixtures and ensure restrooms are properly supplied.
- Dust, polish, and clean walls, doors, windows, lockers, furniture, woodwork, and other surfaces, including those that require ladders or other lifting equipment.
- Replace light bulbs in overhead fixtures, including those requiring a ladder.
- Move furniture and set up rooms for special events.
- Notify supervisor of equipment conditions and facility needs.
- Perform minor building maintenance as required.
- Check all fire extinguishers monthly.
- Monitor restrooms for running water or overflows.
- Model non-discriminatory behavior at all times and adhere to established safe work practices.
- Follow all MCPS policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, or Head Custodian.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform routine manual labor and use cleaning equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical agility to lift and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted, bend, stoop, kneel, walk, climb ladders, and reach overhead.
- Ability to read and comprehend printed materials with or without vision aids.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Experience Requirements:
- Prior experience in custodial work is preferred
